What is SIDS?

• SIDS is identified as the cause of death for a baby when all other possible causes have been ruled out. SIDS is the sudden and unexpected death of an infant younger than 1 year that remains unexplained after a complete postmortem examination including an autopsy, a review of the case history, and a death scene investigation.
• A syndrome is a number of symptoms occurring at the same time that characterize a disease or condition. The use of the word syndrome in SIDS reminds us that there may be multiple reasons why babies die suddenly.
• It is a puzzling disease because seemingly healthy babies can die from SIDS with no warning.
